Overview of the Republic of Colombia

The Republic of Colombia is located in northwestern South America and has a population of approximately 45,000,000. The capital Bogotá is the largest city, with a population of approximately 7,900,000, and is located in the center of the country. Colombia is bordered by Venezuela in the northeast, Brazil in the southeast, Peru and Ecuador in the south, and Panama in the northwest; Colombia is the only nation in South America that has coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, in which it has islands such as San Andres and Providencia. The official language is Spanish, and the legal currency is the Peso Colombiano. Colombia is recognized worldwide for its coffee, flowers, emeralds, coal, and petroleum.

Colombia is a year-round destination. The rainy season is in March/April and October/November. The climate varies significantly per region and depends on the elevation. Temperatures can range from cool (52-62°F, above 7800 ft) and subtropical (71-86°F, up to an elevation of 3900ft) to tropical. Temperatures vary little throughout the year. Light clothing is recommended. However, if you are traveling to the highlands make sure to bring some warm clothing for in the evening.

Colombia is the 26th largest nation in the world and the fourth-largest in South America (after Brazil, Argentina, and Peru), with an area more than twice that of France. It also has the third-largest population in Latin America after Brazil and Mexico.

Colombia is a standing middle power with the second largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico.

It is also one of the largest manufacturers in South America. Colombia is very ethnically diverse, and the interaction between descendents of the original native inhabitants, Spanish colonisers, African slaves and twentieth-century immigrants from Europe and the Middle East has produced a rich cultural heritage.

This has also been influenced by Colombia's incredibly varied geography. The majority of the urban centres are located in the highlands of the Andes mountains, but Colombian territory also encompasses Amazon rainforest, tropical grassland and both Caribbean and Pacific coastlines. Ecologically, Colombia is considered to be among 17 of the most megadiverse countries in the world.
